About the Empress Joséphine (L’Impératrice Joséphine) painting ‘The Empress Josephine,’ an oil painting by Pierre-Paul Prud’hon created around 1805, resides in the Louvre Museum in Paris. This art piece presents Joséphine de Beauharnais, the first wife of Emperor Napoleon I, in the serene surroundings of La Malmaison, imbued with romantic melancholy. Prud’hon, esteemed by the imperial family and also Josephine’s drawing mentor, merges neoclassical style with the English tradition of open-air portraiture, evoking a romantically somber mood. Emblematic of early Romanticism, this portrait was formerly a part of Napoleon III’s personal collection. Following his overthrow in 1871, it was allocated to the Louvre pursuant to a 1879 judicial decision.
